The European Commission said that “sufficient progress” has been reached with Britain. With the basic understanding of where both sides are in terms of the divorce bill open the floor for further trade negotiations. Some see the future cooperation through a Canada-style trade deal between the UK and the European Union.
With a few hiccups on the way, Britain gave ground on European Union citizens, the divorce bill and the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Even though this stage seems to be completed, the trade talks will be a domestic ordeal for Theresa May. She may not be able to keep her own party united with both pro-Brexit and anti-Brexit MPs waiting for their time at the table. If the Northern Ireland deal would be similar to the condition nowadays, Britain will need to maintain full alignment with the EU’s rules while not being able to negotiate and amend these rules. Brexiteers may scream even louder when May needs it least.
